Heat Stabilisers
PVC requires heat to soften it and thereby to prepare it for processing. The process can produce hydrochloric acid (HCl) that can deteriorate the polymer and cause color change and degradation in finished products. Heat stabilizers are added to avoid decomposition and degradation, enabling the polymer to remain stable under heat, sunlight, and other environmental conditions. There are many different types of heat stabilizers used to protect PVC. Most are metal-based and include lead, barium, calcium, and tin compounds. There are also several organic based systems. Another interesting product is a synthetic zeolite that can act as a co-stabilizer in PVC and traps chlorine ions released during degradation, preventing them from contributing to further chain reactions and improving the durability of the PVC product.
Rigid PVC is typically stabilized with tin, which is primarily used in North America. In Europe, calcium-zinc is replacing the archaic tin stabilizing system. In addition to lowering the cost of production, these products are also more environmentally friendly than their lead and cadmium counterparts.
A series of tests were performed to evaluate the performance of a new heat stabilizer based on pentaerythritol and zinc oxide in various PVC formulations. The Congo Red test was employed where a piece of PVC is fastened to a sheet of Congo Red paper. The evolution of hydrochloric acid in the paper caused by the degradation of the PVC is measured as a function of time and the results are recorded. The performances of the PVC/Pb, PVC/CaZn, and PVC/OBS systems were compared. The PVC/CaZn and PVC/OBS systems exhibited superior heat stability compared to the lead control.
Gloss Enhancers
PVC is suitable for extrusion profiling of complex shaped products and calendaring of wide films and sheets. It can also be thermoformed to produce a range of shapes, from trays and containers, to furniture and wall coverings. Compared with other plastics, it is less sensitive to temperature fluctuations and exhibits superior embossing performance, with textures ranging from enamel gloss through to suede.
In order to achieve high surface gloss levels, pvc film manufacturers use various additives to boost the viscoelastic properties of calendered films. These additives include low molecular weight vinyl resins and copolymers of methacrylic acid. These materials help to reduce the amount Cutting Vinyl Rolls of granular particles in the film, and increase its transparency. They can also be mixed with fatty acids to improve the flowability of the material, and thus increase its melt strength.
Other pvc film manufacturers also use non-petroleum plasticizers to improve the flowability of the material. This helps the film to adhere better to printing and laminating equipment, and increases its tensile strength, toughness and thermal stability. It also helps the film to resist cold cracking and oxidation, as well as provide a higher level of moisture resistance.
One manufacturer uses a combination of heat stabilizers and non-petroleum plasticizers in their production process to create flexible clear PVC film that can be printed, embossed, cut and used for a variety of applications. The film meets UL, CSA, FDA and military specifications. It is also self-extinguishing, flame retardant and cold, hot, caustic, oil and abrasion resistant.
Monomeric Films
The growing preference for smaller portion pack packaging for packaged foods is boosting the sales of PVC films. They offer enhanced barrier properties that protect the food items from oxygen, moisture and sunlight and keep them fresh for long. This in turn reduces the need pvc film manufacturers for preservatives. In addition, they also keep the flavor and aroma intact which enables the products to retain their natural taste and smell for a longer time.

PVC films are also used in medical & clinical applications for bundling of medicines. This trend is expected to propel the demand for these films in the upcoming quarters. Furthermore, the increased interest in sustainability is fueling the growth of the industry. The use of recycled PVC films is helping in reducing the environmental impact.
Calendered Films
PVC film manufacturers offer a variety of products to suit specific application requirements. These include calendered and cast films. Cast films are often more expensive than calendered options but have superior conformability to a vehicle’s curves and ridges, resulting in a smooth and paint-like finish. They also offer a higher tensile strength and better product uniformity than extruded films. They are used in high-end applications such as ad wraps and automotive displays.
In contrast, calendered films are thinner and less durable than premium cast vinyls. This is due to the fact that they are produced by running a molten mixture of resin, plasticisers and pigments through a series of rollers known as calenders. This process squeezes and stretches the mixture, changing its molecular memory and making it less stable over time. This makes it harder to stretch and more likely to shrink or crack as it ages. Calendered vinyl is best suited for flat surfaces and simple, short-term applications such as window graphics.
