Safety Features

The load capacity of a chain block hoist is usually expressed in tons and can vary between manufacturers. To determine the appropriate size to choose, consider how much you typically lift. If you only lift small items a 1 ton hoist should suffice but for large and heavy equipment it’s best to go for a higher capacity chain block.
Most manual chain hoists only allow the load to be lifted vertically, attempting to move the load horizontally can cause the chain to jam and damage internal components shortening the lifespan of the hoist. This is why some hoists are designed with a 360deg rotating load chain guide to allow the user to operate the hoist horizontally.
Weight

When you pull a hand chain hoist the chain winds around two wheels inside the lifting mechanism and starts to lift an item that is attached to it via a hook. A braking system kicks in when you stop pulling the chain and holds the load at its current position. Maintenance
Performing maintenance on hoist equipment ensures that it is functioning correctly and safely. It is important to regularly perform visual inspections and test the equipment’s performance under load, which can highlight any existing damage or wear.
Check that the chain is clean and free of grit, dirt, oil, and other foreign material. Inspect the chain using a gauge for any signs of wear, including gouges, nicks, arc burns, twisted, bent, or worn links. Check that the wire rope is reeved and seated correctly in the drum grooves, that it is not twisted, and that no two lengths of wire rope are touching each other. Check that there is no contacting or touching of electrified components. Make sure that the push-button switch and power source are shut off during maintenance work.
A cracking noise during lifting or lowering of the load may indicate that the chain is not mating accurately with the load wheel. This can be due to a number of things, including debris stuck in the bottom of the load wheel pockets. If the equipment is making this noise, it should be withdrawn from service for thorough examination.
Every chain block should be examined at least once a day. A comprehensive inspection should be conducted every month and a detailed record of any damage or wear should be made. If any defects are found during the monthly examination, the chain block should be referred to a competent person for a thorough examination.
