High Dynamic Range Mobile HDR
HDR, or high dynamic range, is a major upgrade in display technology that’s changing the way we see pictures. It allows you to get much more detail out of the bright and dark areas of your photos, which is great for landscapes, nature scenes, and other situations that typically have high contrast and low detail.
When you switch on the HDR feature on your iPhone, the camera will capture several different exposures at different brightnesses and combine them into a single well-lit photo. This process will take slightly longer to process than normal, but it’s well worth the wait if you love taking detailed, well-balanced photos.
Newer models of the iPhone are automatically set to use the HDR setting, known as Smart HDR, when it seems necessary. But you can manually control this feature on older models by turning off Auto HDR in the Settings app and tapping HDR to turn it on.
You can also decide whether or not you want your iPhone to save the HDR version of the photo, or both a HDR and a non-HDR photo when you shoot with the camera. Night Shift Mode
Night Shift is a new feature in iOS 9.3 that reduces the amount of blue light emitted by an iPhone’s screen to help you get better sleep. The same technology is available on Macs, and Apple even created a free app for iOS devices called f.lux that does the same thing.
Night Shift uses a clock and geolocation to figure out when the sun sets in your area and adjusts the colors on your iPhone’s screen accordingly. During the day, your display will look bright white with a blue lighting scheme, but as night falls and the light fades away, it will shift to a warmer yellow.
The night shift feature is automatically scheduled to activate at sunset and turn off in the morning based on your location, but it can be turned off manually if you want to. To do so, open the Settings app and select Display & Brightness.
On the Night Shift section of the menu, toggle on the “Manually Enable Until Tomorrow” switch. With this mode turned on, you won’t need to activate it again until the next time you turn on your device.
You can also set Night Shift to automatically turn on when you get home from work, or turn it on and off based on a schedule of your choosing. This requires that the Location Services feature under “Privacy” be enabled.
