An ONT is indoor-fiber-optic-patch-cords also referred to as an Optical Line Terminal, or OLT, and it has specific roles in the overall functioning of fiber-optic communication networks.

ONTs are used to connect the broadband internet from the service provider’s optical network to wired devices inside a home or business. They convert the optical signals into electrical data signals that electronic devices like computers and routers can understand, enabling them to access your fiber internet connection.

Some ONTs are designed to receive power from the optical fiber itself, eliminating the need for external power cables. Others are equipped with power outlets and backup batteries that provide continuous operation in the event of a power outage. The ONT can also be connected to a Powerline adapter set, which enables connectivity over your home’s existing electrical wiring. This is a great option for situations when relocating an ONT isn’t possible but you still need Ethernet connections.

Optical Network Units

Optical Network Units (ONU) are the customer-side devices that connect to the Passive Optical Network (PON), enabling high-speed broadband services to be delivered. ONUs are installed in homes and buildings, connecting to the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) in the service provider’s central office. They convert optical signals transmitted over the fiber optic cable to electrical signals for use by end-user devices.

The ONU can be either active or passive, depending on the needs of each network. Its main function is to connect the PON to the end-user device, with a single optical fiber. It also supports a variety of services such as data, IPTV (interactive network television), and voice (using IAD or Integrated Access Device). It is used to provide a true triple-play experience for users.
