Composite Drainage Network – Filtration, Drainage, Ventilation and Protection
Developed to collect and transport subsurface water, drainage composites are an alternative to traditional French Drains. While the basic idea remains the same, they are much easier to install and cost substantially less than their counterparts.
Drainage composites are composed of a molded three-dimensional core and nonwoven geotextile fabric. Their value lies in the way they rapidly discharge groundwater, lower soil levels and stop soil liquefaction and foundation settlement.
Filtration
Drainage composites are an all-in-one system that eliminates the need for a trench and multiple components. They collect and transport water to drainage outlets — they are much faster to install than French Drains.
These geocomposites consist of a perforated pipe sandwiched between two or more layers of geosynthetics (usually geotextiles). A drainage composite collects and conveys liquid or gas while providing separation and filtration functions. They are also used to intercept and transport leachate in landfill liner and cover systems and to conduct vapor or water beneath pond liners of various types.
The drainage composite core is manufactured via a specific extrusion forming technique. The core has a tri-dimension thick vertical rib, and the top and bottom of each inclined rib is bonded with needle stick perforated nonwoven filter geotextiles. This double sided adhesive seepage geotextile has excellent performance of “filtration*-drainage*-ventilation*-protection”, and can replace traditional sand and gravel. It can discharge underground water quickly, decrease groundwater level, and stop soil liquefaction and basis settlement.
The drainage composite also acts as a support and isolation layer. Laying it between the foundation and mudsill can discharge the dewatering hydrops, prevent the mudsill fine material from entering into the foundation strata, limit the aggregate base move transversely, and increase the supporting property of the foundation. This limiting effect can also reduce the impact of frost heave on the basement floor.
Drainage
Three dimensional composite drainage network is a new type of geosynthetic materials. It is made up of a three-dimensional geonet core and needle punched nonwoven geotextiles stuck on both sides. It combines “filter – drainage – ventilation – protection” effect. It can be used to replace the traditional sand and gravel for road engineering. Drainage composites are primarily intended to collect water at the surface and prevent it from entering the foundation/subbase layer, thus reducing the amount of dewatering material that needs to be placed in the subbase and increasing the working life of both rigid and flexible roads. Compared to conventional French Drain systems, this can save 50% of the installation cost.

Protection
The composite drainage network has multifunctional performance of filtration, drainage and ventilation. The non-woven filter fabric prevents soil particles from clogging the core and also provides a good barrier to protect the waterproofing membrane against damage during construction or installation.
It can be used as underground drainage material, effectively discharge groundwater and rain amassed water, lowering the prevalence of water mess ups and ground water rising. It is also widely used in railway, highway tunnel and municipal engineering for the purpose of slope protection.
In road engineering, the composite drainage network is used as a replacement for slope materials such as concrete block stone to improve the balance and bearing capacity of the roadway and decrease the soil loss.
