The main component of filter paper is cellulose, a natural organic polymer found in wood pulp and cotton fibers. During the manufacturing process, lignin is separated from the cellulose and other carbohydrate compounds such as hemicelluloses are removed as well. The resulting paper has a unique structure, with a random matrix of cellulose fibers which capture particulates from fluids.

While cellulose filter papers are a versatile and economical choice, they do require regular cleaning to prevent clogging which will significantly reduce filtration efficiency. It is also used in a variety of other products and applications including textiles, paper, chemical filters and fiber-reinforced composites. Cellulose is a biodegradable and renewable resource that can be grown without the use of pesticides or fertilizers.

The chemical structure of cellulose is made up of long chains of glucose molecules that are joined together by hydrogen bonds. This makes cellulose more rigid than starch and other complex carbohydrates, which have a coiled structure.
