Hexagon Bolts
Hex bolts are threaded fasteners with hex, or six-sided, heads. They can be tightened or removed using socket wrenches and are commonly used in construction, machine work, and general household applications. Hex bolts come in a variety of sizes, materials, and specifications. Stainless steel hex bolts, for example, are suitable for use in environments that require corrosion resistance. They also have high tensile strength, which allows them to secure infrastructure that requires strong clamping forces.
Grade 10.9 hex head cap screws, also known as engineers bolts, are heat-treated carbon and boron fasteners that are suitable for heavy-duty applications like joining automotive suspensions or attaching plumbing valves to forged iron pieces. They have hex heads, or six-sided tops without indentations, that create greater torque than square-headed fasteners. These hex bolts are available in black oxide, zinc yellow, and blue phosphate finishes to resist corrosion in dry or wet environments. Some have a fully threaded design while others are partially threaded to provide additional gripping strength when applying force to the head from the side. Q. I produce outdoor signs and we are considering switching from stainless steel bolts to zinc plated bolts for cost savings. Stainless bolts corrode over time due to exposure to salty air and moisture. Will zinc plated bolts last as long?
Answer: Hi Mike. There are many different types of zinc plating available, including black oxide, zinc yellow, and hot-dipped galvanized. Black oxide has a light coating that is corrosion resistant in dry environments, while zinc yellow and zinc electroplated have a thicker coating that is better suited for wet applications. Hot-dipped galvanized has a heavier coating that is even more corrosion resistant than zinc electroplated, and it also resists yellowing over time.
When you use a zinc-plated fastener, it is important to understand that the acid dipping process that precedes the zinc plating allows hydrogen to penetrate into the surface and remain entrapped in the layer of zinc. This causes a condition called HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT, marine electrical connectors waterproof which makes the fastener brittle and less able to withstand stress. To prevent this, you need to ensure that the plated fastener has undergone a treatment to de-embrittle it prior to its use.
Polyvinyl Chloride
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a thermoplastic material that is made by the chemical reaction of vinyl chloride monomer and a variety of stabilizers, lubricants, plasticizers and fillers. PVC is available in both rigid and flexible forms. The rigid form is often used in construction for pipe applications, windows and doors. It can be made softer and more flexible by the addition of plasticizers, which are usually phthalates. This softer form is commonly used in electrical cable insulation, flooring, phonograph records and inflatable products.
The degradation of PVC is complex and involves several pathways, such as oxidation, hydrolysis, hydration and depolymerization. The rate of degradation depends on the particle size, molecular weight and the type and amount of additives. It also depends on environmental conditions, such as temperature and light. The degradation process can lead to the formation of toxic byproducts, including dioxins and furans.
These harmful byproducts can enter the human food chain, causing health issues in humans. They have also been found in drinking water and have been associated with the accumulation of microplastics in the environment. These contaminants can reduce the quality of water and soil, leading to reduced availability of these resources for human consumption.
